Marissa has the qualifications.

A 2006 graduate of DePaul, she earned her college degree while commuting from home so she could care for her younger siblings. Marissa then earned a Juris Doctor from Loyola University New Orleans in 2010.

Marissa works hard.

Marissa’s intelligence and work ethic are legendary among her peers, which is why she’s the only candidate who has worked for prestigious law firms AND was chosen for three different prestigious legal clerkships.

Marissa uses her legal qualifications to help people that others leave behind. Working families, ex-offenders, local businesses, and anyone else feeling locked out of the American Dream. From criminal justice reform and re-entry at The First 72+ to civil litigation to volunteer work with the Orchid Society and Coats for Kids, Marissa steps up to fight for justice and help those in need.

First City Court handles the following:

  • Evictions with a monthly rent up to $3,000
  • Small claims
  • Tenant-landlord disputes
  • Contract disputes
  • Personal injury claims under $25,000.
  • Judges- three judges that serve New Orleans residents for six-year terms.

Here are a few examples.

Contract Disputes:

Dane and Denisse entered into an agreement for Dane to repair Denisse’s house for $5,000.00. For the repairs, Denisse paid $5,000.00 to Dane in advance. Dane began the repairs on Denisse’s house, but he never completed the job or refunded Denisse her money. Denisse sent a demand letter to Dane for return of the $4,500.00 owed to her to no avail.

Tenant-Landlord Disputes:

Karen’s lease expired and she timely moved out of her apartment, ensuring she properly cleaned it out. After she moved out, she sent her landlord a letter requesting the return of her $1,000.00 security deposit and provided him the address where can send the deposit to her. It has been two months and she has not received the security deposit from her landlord, nor has she received an accounting from him.

Personal Injury:

Cathy was involved in a minor car accident where she was rear-ended by Joe. She sustained injuries and underwent medical treatment, causing her to miss time off work. The amount offered by Joe’s insurance was not sufficient to cover her medical expenses, lost wages, pain, and suffering.
